Product Description
First Week Activities are significant in building relationships and a positive learning environment.

Getting to know your students is an essential first step in building relationships.

Consecutive Integer Sums allows you to observe students’ number sense and facility with number operations.

The goal is for students to discover which numbers, 3 to 32, can be represented by consecutive integer sums. In addition students are challenged to find the pattern of numbers that have multiple representations and numbers that cannot be represented by consecutive sums at all.

This activity is flexible. Students might work in teams to produce solutions cooperatively and post them on the board. They might work as partners to fill out a team worksheet. Students could write solutions on sentence strip paper to post on a bulletin board or enter them on a shared spreadsheet (Google Sheets, for example).

You can extend the activity by allowing negative integers. The activity is set up for positive integers only.

As you debrief with students, ask what strategies they used? Did they find any shortcuts? What made some numbers easy? What made some numbers difficult?

Solutions are included.

Hope your first week of school is amazing!
