This activity typically takes 30-40 minutes and is the main activity on the first day of school in my classroom! Stop boring them with class policies and syllabi and engage them in creative thinking and collaboration on the first day. The students will find it somewhat challenging and definitely engaging.
In this fun first week of school activity, students will get to know their teammates and their classmates by discovering what they have in common and representing what they've discovered on a coordinate plane.
In groups, students will pick a point to represent themselves. Then together label the axes with a title and scale so that their scatterplot is representative of their team. Students then present their scatterplots to the class.
This activity is geared for upper-level students who have an understanding of scatterplots and the coordinate plane.
