Product Description
First Week Activities are significant in building relationships and a positive learning environment.

Getting to know your students is an essential first step in building relationships.

Creating mini-posters (8.5 x 11) not only provides information about your students and creates instant classroom decoration, but it also gives you insight into students’ creativity and interest in numbers.

This activity is flexible. The assignment can be posted online. Students can create an online poster using Google Docs or Google Slides. Or students can create the poster on paper. This activity makes a good first day classroom activity as well as a homework activity.

Consider using a 1-minute clip from The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon explains the “best” number is 73 as your intro to this activity. Here is the YouTube URL: https://youtu.be/HctPBzPCsxE.

The assignment asks students to choose their favorite number and to represent that number creatively on a mini-poster. The number is the centerpiece of the poster and the title. Students explain why they chose this particular favorite number and include as many details about their numbers as possible. Cultural references, song lyrics, movie quotes, scientific references, as well as math notes are expected.

Use the posters to decorate the classroom. Create a “favorite number” number line. Use the favorite numbers in math problems; analyze them statistically – find the mean, median, mode, range. Create a stat plot. Find the line of best fit. Use the favorite numbers to create an absolute value function – graphing the difference between each favorite number and Sheldon’s 73.

I provided a basic frame for the posters if you want to use it. Of course, just handing out plain paper works just as well and saves you from copying the frame.

Hope your first week of school is amazing!
