First Week Activities are significant in building relationships and a positive learning environment.
Getting to know your students is an essential first step in building relationships.
Creating mini-posters (8.5 x 11) not only provides information about your students and creates instant classroom decoration, but it also gives you insight into students’ creativity.
This activity is flexible. The assignment can be posted online. Students can create an online poster using Google Docs or Google Slides. Or students can create the poster on paper. This activity makes a good first day classroom activity as well as a homework activity.
Encourage students to think creatively about the numbers in their lives. To introduce this activity, consider reading a picture book! Missing Math: A Number Mystery by Loreen Leedy would be perfect! So is Math Curse by Jon Scieszka – a better-known book.
Use the posters to decorate the classroom. OR put them in a binder to use as a reference when wanting to connect with students or when creating your homespun word problems. Use the information on the posters in your online quizzes (like Kahoot or Quizizz) to challenge students!
I provided a basic frame for the posters if you want to use it. Of course, just handing out plain paper works just as well and saves you from copying the frame.
Hope your first week of school is amazing!
