First Week Activities are significant in building relationships and a positive learning environment.
Getting to know your students is an essential first step in building relationships. Finding out what they remember from previous courses is important. Ask students to work on this task in partners, triads, or in small groups.
This activity is flexible. The expectations for students’ understanding of these words will depend on their previous work in math. Here is a list of terms included:

Here are some ways to use this activity:
1. Project the Word Splash “master” page. Ask students to link words in meaningful sentences. Use Think-Pair-Share strategy to support students’ thinking.
2. Use the word splash cards in an open-ended sort. Give student groups a set of cards. Ask them to sort them in categories of their choice – no more than four categories. After sorting ask groups to explain their choices. How did they define the categories? How did they determine which terms went together? If students worked with partners, then ask two sets of partners to team up and discuss their categories.
3. Assign 1 or 2 words to pairs of students. Ask them to create mini-posters illustrating the words. Use student-created posters in your word wall.
Provide textbook glossaries or online dictionaries to support students who need help with the words.
