First Year of High School
Gifted and Talented Project

This GATS Project is designed for students who currently are completing their first year of High School, but can be adapted to suit any first year of schooling (in NSW Australia that means Year 7 is the first year of High School). The task can be given to students to complete at home or as an in class project. I personally do a combination with the project being started in class and then completed at home. The students are given approximately 6 months to complete this project and their progress is checked on at regular intervals. This has been a very successful project with a high completion rate by students with some amazing and humorous results!

The project has been designed with 21st Century Learners in mind. It features elements and skills for students to cope in a 21st Century world. The assignment develops skills in Self-Regulation, Multi-Modal presentation, Knowledge Construction, Real World Problem Solving, Collaboration and use of ICT.

The project also contains lessons on Multiple Intelligences and ELLI (Effective Lifelong Learning Initiative). Both of these are meant to develop the student’s insight into their learning styles and strengths.

I have had great success with this project and at my High School we use the Year 7 GATS projects as part of the Jumpstart program which is for at risk students entering High School the following year. The best projects are chosen and the GATS students present them to the Year 6 students.

Also available is the GATS Project i use with our Year 8 students - Let's Make a Difference.

Happy Teaching
