What is Nowrouz? Nowrouz is a festival that is celebrated on the first day of spring every year (usually March 21). It is also the Persian New Year. Nowrouz, like the first day of spring, is all about new beginnings.
This one-page handout features a beautiful poem by Behrooz Parhami about the arrival of spring. Students are asked to translate words they do not know, to make inferences about the author's point of view, to draw a picture of part of the poem, and to relate the poem to their own experiences. Although this was designed for ELLs, the file is editable, so you can adapt the questions as needed to meet the needs of your students and to introduce them to this fun springtime holiday!
