In this activity, that you can do in the classroom or in your living room, they really get to understand who the first explorers were and why they came. Why? Because they get to be those first explorers!
First they take an assessment on what they already know, and then play Name That Sound and Repeat After Me.
They will read a narrative that puts them in the middle of the action 12,000 years ago, and then turn that narrative into a skit using long and short vowel sounds, complete with making a mammoth!
It can be simple, where they just act out the narrative, or it can be more challenging, where they have to add to the script using selected spelling, vocabulary or grammar. I’ve included what we’re learning in my 2nd grade class for you in this lesson, but you may use your own words or standards to customize this lesson to meet your students’/child’s specific needs.
This activity makes for a great integration with language arts and art, and is one activity they are sure to learn from, connect to and remember for a very long time.
Thank you and enjoy being the First to Set Foot in America!
