What educators are saying

Relatable story and engaging for the students. Fun to dig deeper into different customs in both our own lives as well as other nations.

Looking for a way to tie a powerful short story and a Thanksgiving activity into one short but challenging project? Look no further. This three-day plan will help you incorporate Amy Tan's personal narrative, "Fish Cheeks," with a meaningful dive into cultural customs around the dining table. Students will complete a compare + contrast activity and a mini-research project. A perfect way to combine close reading, research, and writing in a unique, cross-curricular way!

Check out the PREVIEW to see more information!

What's Included:

  • Day One: Students read Amy Tan's short story "Fish Cheeks." Then they compare Chinese customs to American customs using the Venn diagram.
  • Day Two: Students examine their own cultural dining customs and consider their preferences when it comes to table manners.
  • Day Three: Students research the customs of another culture and compare their findings to their own cultural customs. Finally, they'll package up their findings in an appealing way and present them to the class or their peers!

Prep is quick and easy... Just print out the included materials, or assign the digital slides on your digital learning platform.
