Fish – What Makes a Fish a Fish (Science Nonfiction and Literacy Unit)
Animals are different in many ways. All animals can be sorted and placed in special groups with similar characteristics. Children will learn about fish and what makes fish different from other animals.

Nonfiction Science Information – Literacy Practice – Graphing Practice
PowerPoint:
19 Page PowerPoint presentation on the characteristics of the fish group of animals.
Student Center Nonfiction Science Facts:
These printables (color and black/white) include an information booklet and other materials that can be used as a study packet for student centers or as an individual book for each student. The material includes nonfiction information about the characteristics that are common for all fish.
Activities and Worksheets:
These activities about fish are completed after the student views the PowerPoint or Student Information Packet.
Nonfiction Facts
• Students pick a favorite fish, draw or paste a picture of the animal and then tell why this animal is their favorite fish.
• Students complete a worksheet related to what makes a fish a fish.
• Students look at a sheet of animal photos and select which two animals fins. They paste those photos on a worksheet and then answer questions about these two fish. Students will be required to do some basic research.
• Students Indicate whether statements are true or false.
• Students cut out different animal characteristic and paste each characteristic in a column as a “true” fish fact or in a column as a “not true” fish fact.
Literacy and Graphing Practice
• Graph Practice – Students complete a bar graph about fish and answer questions related to the results.
• ABC Order - Students put a list of common fish in ABC order.
• Sorting – Students put a list of common animals in order from smallest to largest.
• Fact or Opinion - Students cut out statements about fish and paste those statements in either a fact or opinion category.
• Fact or Opinion - Students Indicate whether statements are facts or opinions.
