PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

How many times have you sent your high school students home to read a few articles or a few chapters for homework and the following day, when it's time for discussion, the room is dead silent and lifeless?

This happened to me all of the time in my first few years of teaching. If you're looking for a way to make class discussion purposeful and student-led, then FISHBOWL DISCUSSIONS are a great structure to try!

A fishbowl discussion can be used for any level of students, but you need to know the dynamics of your class well. Fishbowls have worked best for me at the upper grades (10th and up) but I know that a freshman class could handle this type of activity.

A fishbowl is a discussion of key questions (based on a unit essential question, based on a series of readings the kids have done, etc.) that students are discussing “in the bowl”. You students will be in one of two places: in the bowl, or in the audience.

What’s included?

With your purchase today, you will be downloading:

~A full-page description of what a “fishbowl” is, who uses it best, the standards it aligns to, and how to best maneuver this discussion forum in your own classroom
~A list of resources to consult for material to discuss
~A step-by-step lesson plan procedure for the instructor to follow
~Three individual fishbowl lessons covering the following topics:
~Dystopian fiction
~Fairy tales
~The Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris
~A grading rubric

The lessons I've included are ones that have been successfully implemented in my own classroom. Feel free to use them yourself, modify the questions, or simply use them as a model for your own content!

Even if you don't teach Language Arts, don't be afraid to try a fishbowl...these discussions are a great forum for vigorous, lively, structured discussion about any content topic!
