This resource is a companion to a set of stations that I created called “Fishin’ for a Melody with B, A, & G” The stations are meant to keep all students working and on-task whether they’re at a station for 2 minutes or 20. I’ve tried to include enough variety with the flash-cards that students can continue working on their own without redirection from you. My hope is that this also gives you the opportunity to mix and match flashcards. Maybe you’ll print Station 1 twice and separate it in a variety of ways. Maybe you’ll squish stations together. Whatever you do, play around with the cards and see what you come up with. I’d love if you’d tell me about your variations so that I can us them and so that I can make the resource better for other people!
My students love playing the recorder, but I haven’t always loved the logistics of testing students who are learning the recorder. The testing itself is fine, but it’s always been a struggle to set up stations that keep non-testing kids on task and keep them engaged enough to allow me to test the others. I needed a set of stations that can be used by students at ALL levels!
Each station in this set has the capability to be used with only E or both E & D. I did this because I know that some people teach E first and want some repetition on E before they move on to D. All E only cards have chevron backgrounds and all E & D cards have stripe backgrounds so that you can easily tell them apart and sort.
This product includes:
*Four different stations/centers for students playing the soprano recorder. Stations get increasingly more difficult as students are asked to improvise notes, create patterns with the cards, and create 4-8 beat melodies. All stations use the notes B, A, G, and E and each station also comes with the optional D cards (if you’re interested in recorder sets for only BAG or for a set of BAG with high C’/D’ see the bottom of this listing).
*Station 1: A set of 21 flash cards. Each flash card has a four beat melody in standard notation utilizing the notes B, A, G and low E. Students are asked to play the cards and then put them into patterns to create a short phrase. This station helps to reinforce reading notes on the staff and arranging into a phrase. There is also a companion set for station one that includes cards for low D. This includes 21 more cards and utilizes the notes B, A, G, low E, and low D in its patterns.
*Station 2: A set of 33 flash cards. Each card has ONLY a rhythm pattern and a letter at the beginning of the card utilizing the notes B, A, G, and low E. Students must play the rhythm on the note that is indicated on the front of the card. This station helps students to associate notes with basic rhythms. This station also prepares students for the improvisation process on Station 3. Cards come with stick or standard notation. There is also a companion set for station two that includes cards for low D. This includes 33 more cards and utilizes the notes B, A, G, and low D.
*Station 3: A set of 24 flash cards. Each card has only a rhythm pattern and TWO LETTERS at the beginning of the card utilizing the notes B, A, G, and low E. Students must play the rhythms choosing from the notes that are indicated on the front of the card. Students can choose to play the whole card on one note or switch in the middle of the note. This station helps students to improvise a little as they play a given rhythm but get to choose what note they play. Cards come with stick or standard notation. There is also a companion set for station three that includes cards for low D. This includes 33 more cards and utilizes the notes B, A, G, low E, and low D.
*Station 4: A set of 24 flash cards. Each card has two standard notes on the staff and two beats that are ONLY rhythms. This means that students get to play some given notes but have to make up part of the measure and can use any of the notes they know (B, A, G, or E) to complete the measure. This station helps students to improvise as they play. The given notes and rhythms help to scaffold as they work through the cards. There is also a companion set for station four that includes cards for low D. This includes 24 more cards and utilizes the notes B, A, G, low E, and low D.
*Stations can be done in any order. I suggest that you go through each station once or twice with students or walk them through the procedure before you ask them to do it on their own. However, there is one big “explanation” card in the set so that you can hand a mini-explanation out with the flashcards in case students forget what they’re supposed to do.
*All cards can be printed in black and white but are set in a variety of fun colors.
I got so excited about this set of stations that I created some more! Each set of stations comes in a different color so that you can easily separate by grade level or ability level, but all three CAN be used together if you so choose. I have a separate set for B, A, G, and low E and low D and I also have another set for B, A, G, and High C’, and High D’. OR grab them as a bundle! See them all her:
