This fun game practices 40 of the most common contractions. It takes a little bit of time to set up, but it is well worth the effort!
Get an empty oatmeal or similar container and paint it blue. Then paint fish, seaweed, and other ocean animals and plants around it. Cut a circle in the top of the container large enough to pull the fish out. This is your fishing hole.
You can either create a fishing pole by tying a string and magnet to a stick or just but a children’s magnetic fishing pole at the store.
Print, laminate, and cut out the fish cards and place a paperclip over the mouth before placing them inside the fishing hole.
The first player use the pole to go fishing and pulls out a fish. He then must name the two words which make up the contraction on the fish or give the contraction formed by the two words on the fish. If he is right he keeps the fish and play continues. If he is wrong the fish goes back in the pond and the fishing hole is shook up a bit before the next player takes a turn. Play continues until the hole is fished dry and no fish remain. All players then count their catches and the person with the most fish is the winner.
