Fun . . . Easy Prep . . . 2-Day Activity!
This introductory activity shows students the basics of graphing AND substitution. You'll refer back to it time and time again to as you help students understand the big picture of this important concept!
On Day One, students graph 8 different lines with precision. Each time a line passes through TWO fish, that fish is caught. Students label each line with the equation that was used to draw it, and use this information to fill out a chart detail which fish was caught be which pair of lines.
On Day Two, students look at a few special situations: instances when the lines cross at coordinates containing decimals, and times when they intersect off the printed graph. This opens up the door for an introduction to substitution. Instructions and a two-page worksheet allow students to begin practice with this method.
