Logic Puzzles are an excellent way to help your students develop their critical thinking skills and this puzzle is no exception. My students love these puzzles - sometimes I use them as a bellringer or warm-up, at times I use them as a transition activity - in particular for students that finish their work early. They are also great as a part of emergency sub plans.
This puzzle may have a fitness theme, but it is suitable for any content - not just PE or Health.
In this puzzle, students are asked to determine the number of push-ups, sit-ups, and the time of a mile run for six middle school students. The clues use greater than, less than, and basic math skills as well as be able to use clues such as, "...the person that ran the fastest did the fewest sit-ups..." and "...the slowest runner had the most push-ups and sit-ups combined..."
This logic puzzle also asks students to complete two writing prompt. It asks students to determine who won the fitness challenge and to support their claim with evidence. There are multiple right answers to the prompt, so students will have to consider the evidence and make an argument for one group or the other.
Suitable for any content - every student in any class benefits from improving their critical thinking! This puzzle is probably most suited for grades 5 - 8; younger students could complete this with some support, older students will still enjoy the challenge - they'll just finish a bit sooner :)
Included in the puzzle is a 2-up version to save paper, a one puzzle option with blank space for working, and a one puzzle option with a logic grid, and a separate page with the two writing prompts.
Of course, an answer key is also included :)
