This product contains 1.) a one-page script that introduces the context of a time travel vehicle called “The Radical Time Rewinder” that transports passengers back in time, and 2.) 5 scripts on the topic of Five Colonies of the New World. There is one script for each of these colonies: Saint Augustine, Roanoke, Jamestown, Plymouth, and Saint Mary’s City.
Each script provides very BRIEF reviews of basic information about each colony and each is one page long—two columns of text on one page. There are 16 solo speakers per script with many parts for ALL so that teachers can use the script with a whole class. If you need more solo parts or fewer solo parts, it’s easy to make adjustments by changing the numerals that indicate the solo speakers’ lines before you photocopy and distribute the script to students.
Reading and rehearsing the scripts familiarizes students with the content information while also increasing reading fluency and engaging students in a dramatic approach to learning facts. A fluent and expressive read-through/performance of this whole script takes about 22 minutes. (It was developed with five classes of 4th graders in Maryland who performed the opening and closing together—all 125 students—while each class performed one script per colony.)
Students enjoy creating and performing gestures and sound effects where indicated in the stage directions. And—because it is a script—they do not mind reading and re-reading the information.
For more details and tips about using these scripts with students, you may want to download the FREE copy of "CURRICULUM-BASED READERS THEATRE: A Guide to the Classroom Use of this Strategy" available in my store.
NOTE: If you want a copy of only one of the colony scripts, I separated them into individual scripts that use the same time travel vehicle context. All five scripts begin and end with the same wording. Look within my store for:
