Description

Research shows that students need to interact with a new word several times and in different ways in order to master the word and make it part of their vocabulary. This is especially true for ELLs!

This five-day vocabulary learning protocol was developed for my students based on research-proven methods for vocabulary learning. Interacting with the word in different ways helps to build student schema for the word and helps students learn to use the word in various contexts.

This download contains printable cards and directions for implementing this protocol with your students. Choose 5 essential words your students need for the unit and give them a card for each word. As part of a warm-up or learning center, students fill in the requested information for the day for each word.

Differentiate by assigning students different words based on proficiency level, reading level, or other criteria.

I've seen this strategy used with success in grades 2-12 with a few tweaks!
