5 Little Pumpkins is my FAVORITE all time finger-play and poem! Each October, I read the book and demonstrate the poem using hand movements. The kids love it and we do it over and over again!
Next, I show them the 5 Little Pumpkins in the the pocket chart. On the back of each little pumpkin is the number corresponding to that pumpkin. So when you flip the first pumpkin over, there is the number one, and so forth.
Now I add the text to the pocket chart one word at a time, or one sentence at a time, or all at once. Whatever suits my students best. As we read the text together, I move the 5 Little pumpkins to the quote that corresponds to their number. By the last sentence, all the Little Pumpkins are on the bottom row with their numbers displayed ... and we all read, “The 5 Little pumpkins rolled out of sight!”
Once I have demonstrated how to manipulate the pumpkins and we have practiced reading several times in whole group, the kids reread it again in centers and choice time.
The kids love this poem and can’t wait to share it with mom and dad! They are so excited when I tell them that everyone will be making their own 5 LITTLE PUMPKIN PROJECTS to take home and display!
