Five paragraph essays can be a challenge to teach. If you are feeling overwhelmed with the process or just need some visuals for your students, this PowerPoint is the perfect solution for your classroom!
This PowerPoint is somewhat editable. The backgrounds, titles, and clip art cannot be changed but the information, animations, and transitions can be changed. This PowerPoint was created with Tahoma font, which is standard in Microsoft (PowerPoint).
This PowerPoint can certainly teach your students to write a five paragraph essay but I highly recommend that you also check out my Five Paragraph Essay Instructional Unit. I modeled the PowerPoint after my instructional unit, so the two complement each other. I did use different examples, prompts, and mentor texts in this PowerPoint than what I included in my Five Paragraph Essay Instructional Unit.
I love the process of teaching writing to my students. They begin the year with short, incomplete sentences but by the time I’m done with them, they can write excellent five paragraph essays. I have had many teachers ask me to share my process for teaching the five paragraph essay. Until this point, I haven’t had any guides or worksheets to share with them because it was just an internal knowledge for me. So, I took the time to create this PowerPoint and detail my process for teaching writing. I hope this resource is helpful to you in your classroom and that your students benefit from using it!
This PowerPoint has 80 slides, so it is not meant to be used in one day. My recommendation is that you introduce a skill, like writing body paragraphs, with the PowerPoint and then practice the skill thoroughly before moving to the next skill.
This blog post will help as you dive into five paragraph essays with your students!
