The five paragraph essay is a fundamental writing structure that works well partnered with analysis.
Words are like water, you need a structure to pour them into or they end up in a messy puddle all over the place. This is what I tell students before we start work on the five paragraph essay. By "pouring" their words and ideas into this structure, their readers can "drink" them up. I like the chalice shape because it allows me to make many puns, but also because mimics what the essay format.
