This is an end of unit essay over Night by Elie Wiesel. Students choose a topic to write a five paragraph, analytical essay over the memoir.
The rubric is presented in a checklist format. Each item (which represents a standard which I have taught), receives a check (full credit) check minus (partial credit), or an X (no credit).
Here is how I grade with this rubric: between the five paragraphs and the grammar/mechanics/format section, there are 25 blanks. Plug that number into your EZ Grader (I use an app for that!). 2 check minus marks = minus one. One X = minus one. Therefore, if the student receives two check minuses and one X, then they receive minus 2. Out of 25 blanks, that earns a grade of a 92. This method works for me because it is purely mathematical and produces an accurate grade based on the student's mastery of the standards.
