The purpose of this activity is to integrate social studies concepts and ELA concepts. In this activity students will create questions and then answer them with the article. This meets the CCS standard:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
To begin the activity show students the picture collage of the region being studied. Then, ask students to brainstorm any questions they have, based on the collage. Then, show students the article. This can be projected on the white board, or can be passed out as individual copies per students. Ask students to brainstorm any additional questions after looking at the article.
Finally, read the article as a whole group. See if any of the questions brainstormed were answered while reading the article. A graphic organizer to record any questions and answers is included.
Please note that this article is not designed to be an independent reading level- the article is written at a high level (end 2nd grade) and many students may struggle with the content related vocabulary. It IS perfect as a shared reading activity.
Each article includes five comprehension questions.
An interactive graphic organizers is also included for each region for students to identify location, weather, animals, crops, land features, and special facts about each region.
All articles and collages are also provided in black and white to save ink.
