Very fun lab for students to observe the excitation and de-excitation of electrons! Easy clean-up and lots of qualitative observation!
When certain compounds are heated in a flame, the electrons absorb the energy and become excited. As they de-excite the electrons emit a photon of distinctive colors. Each color is specific to an element and can be used to help identify an unknown compound. By observing and recording the color of light from known samples, the chemical formula for the unknown sample can be identified!
