Product Description
Presenting the fundamentals of Adobe Flash to students in an organized and logical manner can make all the difference in the world to your students. With this 10 lesson bundle designed to guide students through the essential animation techniques, your students will be engaged and intrigued with what Flash has to offer. Students will learn the basic fundamentals of Motion Tweening, Shape Tweening, Masking and Nested Animation. They will discover how to troubleshoot and time their animations using the timeline. Additionally, they will learn some very cool features of Flash such as the Bone Tool, the Spray Brush Tool, and how to add some serious visual appeal to their animations by way of the Camera Movements lesson and the Parallax Scrolling lesson.

The instructions come in the form of interactive PDF files, which allow students to navigate throughout the documents by clicking buttons, click on linked Table of Contents, and toggle between full-screen mode and normal viewing mode. Students enjoy this measure of control over how they get around the instructions, and they are quickly and easily able to backtrack and review information using the Table of Contents.

The lessons are differentiated to appeal to as broad a base as possible. Faster learners are challenged with extensions at the end of every lesson. One of the challenges of teaching Flash is that students finish projects at different speeds. These extensions will keep your fast finishers actively learning as others complete the required elements of each lesson. For students who may struggle to comprehend the instructions or are visual learners, some of the lessons also include some video instruction.

Lessons included in this package (and recommended order of delivery):
Flash CS6 Lesson - Ten Second Countdown, Owning the Timeline!

Students get familiar with the timeline in this activity designed with beginners in mind. The concept is simple; students are asked to create a basic (and accurate) ten-second countdown. Suggested extensions are provided for differentiation.

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Adding “time” to the timeline by inserting frames
- Converting shapes to symbols
- Distributing symbols to their own layers (a GREAT habit!)
- Creating regular and blank keyframes.

Flash CS6 Lesson - Thanksgiving Animation, mastering the Spray Brush Tool

A turkey tries to trick his chicken buddy into wearing a turkey suit on Thanksgiving. This beginner level animation exposes students to fundamental timeline skills. These skills will prove useful as students progress into more challenging animation techniques.

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Using the spray brush tool
- Creating symbols
- Organizing layers on the timeline
- Creating keyframes and blank keyframes
- Learning to use the playhead (aka “scrubber”) to time movies.

Flash CS6 Lesson - Intro to Motion Tweening

A simple “dot” race provides a quick immersion into Motion Tweening. Students repeat simple steps and consolidate their learning in this straightforward exercise. Video available for portions of exercise and extensions suggested for faster finishers. This allows for nice lesson differentiation.

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Motion Tweening
- Creating symbols
- Organizing layers on timeline
- Adding curves to tweens
- Learning to use the play head (aka “scrubber”) to time movies

Flash CS6 Lesson - Modifying Motion Tweens

This lesson is a great way for students to get a deep dive into some of the options available for Motion Tweening. Students not only motion tween movement but also resize, make invisible, change colors, ease in, ease out and make custom paths. Moving monkeys and mastering motion tweening, what fun!!

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Motion Tweening
- Working with symbols and the timeline
- Learning to use the play head (aka “scrubber”) to time movies

Flash CS6 Lesson - Intro to Shape Tweening

Students eat this activity up, mostly because Shape Tweens are so cool. They get the opportunity to pick an animal life cycle and have these animal shapes morph into each other. In my example, an egg morphs into a tadpole, which turns into a froglet, and this froglet transforms into a Frog. It is an engaging activity.

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Shape Tweening (shapes)
- Shape Tweening (words)
- Tracing images
- Learning to use the play head (aka “scrubber”) to time movies

Flash CS6 - Using Layer Masks

In this jam-packed lesson, students learn how to use layer Masks to selectively reveal parts of objects. In this example, we mask a garage door opening and a car emerging from inside the house. Students also learn how to apply textures to the house and yard. Optionally, they create a stucco texture in Photoshop.

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Masking
- Motion Tweening
- Adding photorealistic textures to the house, lawn, and driveway
- Learning to use the play head (aka “scrubber”) to time movies

Flash CS6 - Using the Bone Tool

Students are always attracted to techniques that allow for rhythmic, natural movement. In this lesson, students learn how to use Inverse Kinematics via the Bone Tool to make a cat’s tail wag. They reinforce this concept by making grass sway in the background as if blown by the wind. This is a relatively quick and straightforward activity, but it teaches a tool that students will want to use over and over again in future projects.

This lesson works great for beginner to intermediate learners of Flash. After they have a good sense of the basics (using symbols, the drawing tools, tweening), this lesson will give them more confidence and another tool they can wield to make better more nuanced animations.

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Using the Bone Tool
- Creating realistic looking backgrounds
- Nesting animations inside of symbols
- Learning to use the play head (aka “scrubber”) to time movies

Flash CS6 - Owl and flying boy nested animation

This is a super fun and engaging activity which touches on several Flash animation skills. Students will create a 2 scene movie in which a boy gets inspired by watching an owl flap its wings and fly. Not to be outdone, the boy proves to the owl that he can indeed fly as well, and decides to pay the owl a visit on his branch. In addition to reviewing motion tweening skills, students learn how to use nested animation (movement nested inside a symbol) and single framing techniques. For students who already have had some exposure to Flash, have used the drawing tools, and know the basics, this is a great activity to expand their knowledge. Motion tweening knowledge would be a beneficial but not essential pre-requisite for this lesson. It would also be an ideal independent or extension activity for those motivated front runners in your class who just love producing work. This project is ready to go out of the box!

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Nested Animation
- Motion Tweening
- Single framing
- Using glow and blur filters on movie clip symbols
- Creating interesting, colorful background scenery

Flash CS6 Lesson - Using Parallax Scrolling to create awesome moving backgrounds

Parallax scrolling is a powerful technique that makes animations come alive! Students learn this trick to make their backgrounds appear to have real depth as they move. Elements of the background move at different rates of speed. This all adds up to a realistic, 3-D like feel that students are blown away by. In this lesson, students create a dusky desert scene and imagine that they are driving through the desert. They use the parallax scrolling technique to make it appear as if closer objects (foreground objects such as dirt and cactuses) are moving very fast while other objects that are further away (mountains) are moving much slower.

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Nested Animation
- Motion Tweening
- Parallax Scrolling
- Using rulers and guides to help with alignment
- Creating realistic background movement in animations

Flash CS6 Lesson - Creating camera movements!

This lesson opens students eyes to the wonderful potential of creating a virtual camera in Flash to mimic film-making techniques such as panning, close-ups, and zooming. It is a game changer! In this animation, a hot air balloon flies over a cityscape, and students create a virtual camera that captures everything. I have to admit, this is my single favorite skill in Flash and it really opens up a world of craft and creativity for your students to inject into their movies going forward. They can now quickly and easily make their movies have more appeal and visual pop by learning this skill.

Students practice the following skills in this lesson:
- Creating and coding a virtual camera using the Flash programming language Action Script 3.
- Motion Tweening and Classic Tweening
- Panning, zooming, and close-ups in Flash
