Parallax scrolling is a powerful technique that makes animations come alive! Students learn this trick to make their backgrounds appear to have real depth as they move. Elements of the background move at different rates of speed. This all adds up to a realistic, 3-D like feel that students are blown away by. In this lesson, students create a dusky desert scene and imagine that they are driving through the desert. They use the parallax scrolling technique to make it appear as if closer objects (foreground objects such as dirt and cactuses) are moving very fast while other objects that are further away (mountains) are moving much slower.

In the course of this exercise, students will work on Motion Tweening, nesting animation inside a symbol, working with symbols and using rulers and guides to scale work accurately. This lesson has a wow factor and students enjoy it very much. Though Parallax Scrolling is a technical term, it is actually rather easy to implement. This lesson works well for a beginner to an intermediate level understanding of Flash.
This project allows for differentiated learning, primarily by offering extension suggestions for the early finishers in class. The instructions are comprehensive and in the form of clickable and navigable interactive .pdf files. This project is ready to go out of the box, and students should be able to work independently on it.
