Product Description

This quick unit is intended to take place during the first two weeks of the school year.  It was designed with two intentions in mind.  One, I wanted students to have a certain set of skills and common vocabulary, and two, I wanted to show them that they could think for themselves.

The first purpose seems sort of obvious.  There are close reading skills that all AP Literature students must have and hone in the first days of this intensive course.  In addition, there is vocabulary that is either unique to this course or that now requires more depth, so they need to delve into those differences immediately.

The second purpose, however, is one that has emerged more recently.  With the advent of the smart phone, it has become increasingly easy to look things up.  AP students don’t like not KNOWING the answer, so when they are unsure, they look it up.  Often, they don’t allow their minds to explore and ruminate on the topic or allow themselves the time to come to conclusions on their own.  So, using Flash Fiction allows us to tackle a story in a class period.

This two week unit includes:

  • 7 stories you can do in 1 class period
  • 39 pages
  • day-by-day calendar
  • detailed lesson plans for 10 days of instruction + an extension activity
  • 11 pages of print and go handouts
  • 9 instructional slides
  • a variety of close reading and annotation activities
  • review of diction, allusion, theme, imagery, syntax and detail
  • stories included: "Six-Word Story" (Hemingway), "Sirens" (Kafka), "An Idle Fellow" (Chopin), "A Haunted House" (Woolf), "A Wireless Message" (Bierce), "A Country Cottage"  (Chekhov)
  • Plus lesson plans and activities for "Birthday Party" (Brush)--story not included
