Self regulation is such an important concept for our young learners. To help students gain autonomy and the ability to self regulate their reactions to their emotions, we have Flash Me Your Feelings. Simply paste on card stock, laminate and put on a ring clip. Students can then flash how they are feeling and choose an appropriate strategy to help them to return to a happy, safe state where they are ready to learn.
Blue: A sluggish state - sad, sick, depressed
Green: Ready to Learn - happy, safe, focussed
Yellow: A heightened state - agitated, frustrated, annoyed
Red: Out of Control - hitting, yelling, angry
Some suggested strategies:
- Breathing techniques
- Talking to a teacher
- Taking a break
- Discussing the size of the problem (reaction should match the problem)
- Asking for help
- Sensory or movement breaks
- Plan B conversations (Watch videos by Dr. Ross Greene - Collaborative & Proactive Solutions)
- Asking for choices
- Fidget toys
