This activity explores how grade levels are assigned to reading passages. The formula used is the Flesch Kincaid model.
Three passages are examined. One is a Dr. Seuss passage that ends up being for students not even in first grade (a negative number is the answer).
The next passage is a more complicated passage, broken down into easy-to-read syllables and sentences. Students obtain an answer about 12: beyond high school.
A third passage asks students if the passage, found on the Internet as a 4th grade reading excerpt, actually is classified correctly (it is).
Answer pages are included. Also, there is a link provided to download the complete Smart Book presentation for this activity.
