This is a fun way to help students understand the commutative property of addition and fact families, also known as “flip flop facts.” Students can be given a number card (included with this resource) and have to come up with 2 addends/numbers that can be added together to equal the number on the card.
Students then get to do a flip flop craftivity. They take the 3 numbers in their fact family and write them on the straps (which resemble number bonds), making sure they switch, or “flip flop” the numbers on each shoe. They also write the flip flop facts/number sentences on the soles of the shoes.
Each student can also create their own word problem that matches the addition number sentences from their flip flop craft. The word problem has the sentence starter “When I was walking in my flip flops...” Their story problem might have something to do with what they see at the beach, pool, or any summer-themed location. Students can solve their own and/or their classmates’ word problems. Writing paper with the sentence starter is included with this download.
This flip flop fact activity also makes for a great beachy bulletin board!
