Product Description
This is a 500 slide PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides), many built-in hands-on activities with directions, questions, stream table activity about levees (stream table optional), class project / town meeting role playing project about a dam, many video links, 3 page homework, answer keys, lesson notes, and much more.

Flooding, Dams, Levee's, Salmon, Review Game with Answers

This PowerPoint begins describing what flood prevention is in a red slide (important notes. Why floods are dangerous is then presented in a step by step process. Factors that control flooding are presented. A link to some storm sound effects make learning about the different types of flooding events a bit more interesting. Some neat video links are also presented as students learn about flash floods, ice jams, coastal floods, urban floods. Tsunami's are also addressed and waring signs. Natural levees are described and then an artificial levee is described (red slide). A brief history of levees is described and then the PowerPoint describes the four types of levees in a step by step process with visuals. A series of challenge question follow that discuss how levees upstream can increase flooding downstream / loss of floodplain. A neat activity has students create construction teams to make a proposal to the flood committee (staff and student)as to where levee should be placed on a river. I have stream tables and I make a model town with Monopoly houses and then run the stream table and the students records places that could use levees. You could do the project without the stream table and just use the PowerPoint template that is provided although the stream table makes it much more interesting. The teams then research levees and create a presentation. A slide is built into the slideshow that students can use a digital template. I have the students create a PowerPoint presentation to the class. A series of slides also describe to the students how create an effective PowerPoint presentation. Dams are then described and hydroelectricity addressed in a series of red slides. The important of dams (red slides) are described with visuals over many slides. The Three Gorges Dam in China, and the Aswan Dam in Egypt are given special reference to. A reading passage is provided with questions about the Aswan Dam. Students then learn what a Lock is. They watch an animation and try to describe how a lock works in three sentences. This is always a fun learning experience. Students then learn the parts of a dam. A series of challenge slides has the key terms to a dam blocked out. One at a time the terms are revealed. A term will become outlined in yellow on one slide, and then the answer is revealed on the next slide. Teacher can upon students to answer before revealing the answer beneath. A neat continuation of this activity has students translate a foreign language into the English vocabulary for a dam. The negatives of dams are briefly addressed. A video link (It has some editing issues) to a Modern Marvels episode about + and - of dams is provided. You can also purchase this DVD on Amazon for roughly $10. This is a great overview of dams and provides plenty of positives and negatives, history, disasters, and how they work. Students record these positives and negatives for the next project. The final activity in the PowerPoint takes students to an important town meeting. We are introduced to 28 characters. 14 are for the construction of a hydroelectric dam, and 14 are against. Each has their own story and role within the town. Students see the people and the teacher places the names of each character on the floor and the students select one at random (I allow them to trade after) Students then research the pro's and cons of dams and write a persuasive speech in character. The speech day is always interesting as students come to speak in costume. Everyone always gets really into this project. This is a really neat PowerPoint that is full of activities that will involve your students.
