This is lesson 1 of my Florida History and Geography unit. It can be used with a wide range of grades. It was originally intended for homeschooling parents to read through the lessons with their kids, so it's written at about a 6th-7th grade reading level, but usable for K-8.
Everything you need for a great state study is right here. This unit features interactive, informative text, full-color photos, simple map work and engaging review and extension activities.
Take a virtual trip through lovely, lush Florida! You'll visit the sites of the first landing of Spanish explorers in Florida, and the first Spanish mission. Find out how Florida got its name and meet some of its favorite animals. Hear the story of Osceola, who inspired the Seminoles to fight for their land, and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, who wrote the prize-winning book, The Yearling. Throw in the Everglades, the Florida Keys, and Florida's 825 miles of beautiful sandy beaches, and you'll have a trip to remember. Your students will remember it too!
There are five 20-40 minute lessons:
Lesson 1: Introduction to Florida: State Symbols and Basic Facts
Lesson 2: Get to Know Your Florida map; its Beaches and Biggest Lake
Lesson 3: The Everglades, Rivers, and Coral Reefs
Lesson 4: Florida's History and People
Lesson 5: A Virtual Tour of Sites Around the State
