"Flossie And The Fox" by P. C. McKissack, with pictures by Rachel Isadora, is a delightful children's book that has an extremely important lesson for junior and senior high students as well. Young Flossie is asked by her grandmother to deliver a basket of eggs to a neighbor. However, she has to walk through the woods to get there, and encounters a sly, egg loving wolf. Flossie is brave, resourceful, and outsmarts the wolf with her level headed composure. Flossie could be viewed as the black 'Little Red Riding Hood' (who has to have a woodsman rescue her from the big bad wolf) who faces danger, looks it in the eye and refuses to let the wolf know she is afraid. Flossie is self reliant, and the teen audience loves her!! The creative writing assignment, among other things, asks the students to identify the probable WOLVES in their lives and write about them. I received excellent papers from my alternative high school students from the "Flossie" assignment.
