A Game for Strengthening
Grammar and Vocabulary Skills
Aligns with Common Core State Standards within the Language Strand:
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking
Demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings
These games may be played by partners or in a small group. If all students in the group need to work on the same target language concept, use one grid sheet. Alternatively, students can each use a different activity sheet. Each player will also need a tally sheet. The group will share one pair of dice.
One student holds an activity sheet while the partner rolls the dice. The student holding the activity sheet reads the word that corresponds to the two numbers showing on the dice. The answer can be checked (suggested answers are in parentheses). If the student gets the answer correct, he or she puts one check mark on his tally sheet. If the question is missed, then no check mark is entered and the players switch roles. The winner is the student with the most check marks at the end of the allotted time.
For added practice, students can fill in the recording sheet, and practice at home.
