As I was working on my Education Specialist degree I bacame interested the reading fluency. The more I study the subject the more aware I became of the lack of fluency with the students in my classroom. I found that I had many students who were great word callers but could not read phrases or short sentences fluently. I began thinking about how I could help them. This folder contains one of my techniques for helping the student who were lacking fluency. The folder contains 8 cards with phrases on each card. i would print these out on 5x8 index cards. I would have one card for me and one for each student. As the students would working on independent work I would move from student to student letting them read the phrases on the card to me. I would record how long it took them to read each card. I would also keep up with any mistakes they made. They were not allowed to move to the next card until they could read each card with no mistakes. I know some teachers will say that this takes too long, but it doesn't. You may not have time to get to each student in a given period so you just continue the next day until you have tested each student. I have also included a rubric.
