Looking for an easy way to help your students practice improving their fluency? This product contains 25 leveled print-and-go passages that do just that. Each week, students receive a new passage in their folder with quick "jobs" for the next four days. They will complete these tasks at home and return the folder on Friday.
DAY ONE (“Chilly Read”): The student is timed for one minute. The number of words read in that minute is marked in the chart at the bottom of the passage.
DAYS TWO AND THREE (Practice Days): Families are encouraged to read the passage to their child modeling proper fluency, choral read, and discuss what they liked and how they could improve. They check off the boxes in the chart to indicate that they practiced at least twice.
DAY FOUR (“Sizzlin’ Read”): The student is again timed for one minute. Now that they have practiced their passage, they will show off their skills! The number of words read in the minute is marked in the chart. Families should compare/contrast with the “Chilly Read” and discuss. The student should then complete the “How Did You Do?” self-assessment/reflection on the back. This will automatically set their goals for the next week…win win!
The following is a list of the titles of passages and if they are fiction/nonfiction:
Betty the Bird (F)
The Ice Cream Challenge (F)

In addition to the passages, there is an explanation of how I use these folders, an option for a folder cover, and a parent letter.
I received wonderful feedback from parents last school year while piloting this with my second graders. They found that the passages were high-interest and the self-assessment prompted good discussions. I hope that you find the same positive results in your classroom as well!
