In Fluency: Intonation Practice, by the2teachers, you will get a 36 page product to help students practice the ever important skill of intonation.
What is intonation??
Intonation can also be thought of as the reader's voice. It's the rise and fall of the voice as reading. Reading with accurate voice, or intonation, will assist the overall comprehension of a passage.
What is included in this product?
This product has four different levels. The levels are determined by a slight rise in the difficulty of the high frequency words that are used. Each level has eighteen sentence strips. Each strip has one sentence on it that either ends with a period, exclamation mark or question mark. The same sentence is repeated with each end punctuation mark. This was done so the reader's voice must focus on the end punctuation mark to correctly verbalize the meaning of the sentence. Additionally, each level has a teacher recording sheet. This sheet has a place for you to record progress during three checkpoints throughout the year and record your observations. Finally, this product contains three posters. One for each of the end punctuation marks included in the sentences. The posters each have a graphic of the mark and a brief explanation of its usage.
How do you use this product?
This product has been used in centers. When it is utilized this way, partners take turns reading the sentences to one another. The students give one another feedback as to the attention to end punctuation marks. When used this way, this product makes for a good reinforcement of skills addressed in other settings. The second way this product has been used is during small group instruction (guided reading). The sentences are a perfect size to fit in a small pocket chart. It's been used as a warm up activity prior to reading a passage.
Why is this product necessary?
Year after year, we have noticed that students are not attending to end punctuation marks. The voice of the reader is lost. It remains monotone or flat. Although we recognize that there are many factors that contribute to the reason readers struggle, we do believe that this inattention to end punctuation contributes to the challenge of comprehending a passage. With this in mind, we created this product to "force" students to attend to punctuation and explore the sounds the voice makes when reading. This product relies solely on the end punctuation mark. The reader cannot use context clues to help them identify meaning or voice.
What else should I know?
Each level of sentences has a unique color. For that reason, we suggest you print the strips on a color printer and laminate them for years of use. If you are going to use the strips as a center, you may consider fastening them with a book ring, brass fastener, or simply a piece of string/ribbon. (Each card contains a black dot to help you hole punch and line up the cards)
