Fluency Phrases and Fun! ~ Partner Game ~ No-Prep Fluency Practice
This fun little phrase game was designed for my students who were struggling with fluency. Some of my kiddos could read their sight words in isolation, yet they had difficulty transferring that knowledge when reading sentences and stories. This 15-page game packet allows the children to have fun with a partner while reading various phrases containing common first grade sight words.
Directions: Using a pencil and paperclip, Player 1 spins the spinner and reads the phrase to his/her partner. He/She colors a picture with the matching phrase. (If all the pictures with that phrase are colored in, the player loses a turn.) Player 2 continues in the same manner. Players take turns until all the pictures are colored in. The player with the most pictures filled in at the end of the game is the winner.
We've been playing this game in my classroom for a few weeks now and my students are improving steadily and gaining the confidence they need to become stronger readers. They love playing this partner game during our small group guided reading time and they always want to take extra game sheets home to play with family members. And... the parents love it, too!
