Engage your students with fun and interactive fluency practice using the poem, Our Family Picnic by Kenn Nesbitt!
How this product works:
Each student should glue a copy of the poem into a notebook. Using the lesson plans provided, students will discover new elements of the poem each day by highlighting, underlining, circling, or adding in notes. The eight detailed lessons provided cover vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, rhyme, syllables, context clues, sensory words, contractions, and comprehension skills. Each lesson also suggests a way for students to practice reading the poem to build speed and accuracy. After the eight lessons, students complete an included comprehension quiz that reviews the taught material. For additional practice, have your students record themselves reading the poem to assess their fluency, expression, and accuracy. I like to use Seesaw and have the students illustrate a picture to go with the poem.
I like to stretch the eight lessons over two weeks. Practicing our fluency poems takes about 5-15 minutes a day- depending on how detailed I want to be that day.
My students LOVE these poems and their fluency has really improved with this practice!
Poems are printed two on a page. Just copy, cut, and pass out for students to glue in notebooks.
A key is provided for the quiz.
*This poem is written on approximately a 4th grade level*
