Enjoy this free Sneak Peek at my upcoming Fluency Program for big kids!

Our older students must have regular practice reading on the computer so that they can improve upon their reading stamina, fluency, and comprehension. My fluency program introduces students to classic literature while providing them with the support they need to be able to understand this complex text. Here’s how the program works:

*Students read words before they disappear off of the screen. They select from either the red speed (slow) or the yellow speed (medium). This trains their eyes to move across the screen and teaches them to read at a fluent pace. Students will LOVE the challenge of reading all of the words before they disappear off of the screen.

*After reading the story, students extend their learning by doing the following:

a. Click a link to go online and read a summary of the story. This will help them improve upon their comprehension.

b. Reread the story without the words disappearing. This time, their goal is to find new or interesting words. They write down the words and click the link to go to the online dictionary to look up the words. They record the word, part of speech, and definition on the provided printable or in a vocabulary notebook. This will help them improve upon their vocabulary development.

c.Students read the story again, this time at a faster speed. Now that students have a better understanding of the story, they’ll be able to read more fluently for this additional reading.

After completing the assignment, students respond to five multiple-choice questions that are tied to the literary standards. (The quiz is a printable inside of the teacher guide.)

The program was created in PowerPoint 2010. This particular installment uses an excerpt from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Thanks for trying out my system!
