Fluid Restriction: From “Restriction” to “Results.” * Large Print (18pt or higher)
Patients who have dialysis, COPD, heart conditions, and edema are often ordered a FLUID RESTRICTION diet by their doctor. The order might look like this:
“Fluid restriction 1500ml” or “1500cc fluid restriction”
The doctor knows what this means, dietary knows what this means, nursing knows what this means, but the patient usually does NOT know what this means. Because the patient does not know what a fluid restriction is, why they are on a fluid restriction, what a “CC” or “ML” is, what the benefit to them is, the following happens:
* The patient thinks they cannot drink ANYTHING, ends up dehydrating and developing a urinary tract infection (UTI).
* Your patient carries a marked bottle or cup around drinking only the room temperature water in that bottle throughout the day. Your patient thinks they will never again enjoy coffee, tea, juice or soda and the quality of their life is decreased.
* Your patient doesn't understand it, so chooses to ignore the restriction and drinks whatever they want, whenever they want, and their health suffers.
You can change that! Using the following easy to understand education materials, worksheets, and handouts, free your patients from the “restriction” and instead give them “results.”
Each page is designed as a 30 minute therapy session, with several days of sessions included.
