Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting: A reading response activity
This is a two-page reading response activity for students in third through fifth grades to complete before, during and after reading this text. The focus of this activity is on what good readers do. This lesson works very well as a teacher-directed read-aloud, but can easily be used as an independent activity for students.
Each open-ended task provides students with a good reader habit, followed by a reading response question.
It’s an excellent activity for helping students to connect with a text on a higher level and at the same time, make text-to-world connections.
I have also included a question where students write about what they have added to their schema after reading this text. Students are to respond to this in point form, to give them an opportunity to practice writing in this format.
As a teacher who looks for very full, detailed answers from my students, I have provided students with ample lines to record their responses.
