This assignment is designed to be completed in two parts:
Part 1: Focus on Food Groups
This section is meant to be completed by an individual student or small group of students. It is expected that students already have some knowledge of food groups and nutrition OR have access to materials that will provide them with this information. Each student or small group should be assigned a single food group for their focus (fruits/vegetables, protein, grains, or dairy).
A list of some foods from each group is provided at the end of the materials.
Part 2: Food Groups Notes
Once students have completed the Focus on Food Groups pages, the class can come together to complete the Food Groups Notes pages. This can be done as a whole class or as a walk around or jigsaw activity. Since all students have information about one of the food groups, all students can contribute to the completion of the notes.
Depending on your students, this assignment can take 2-5 class periods to complete. Some students may need multiple days to complete the Focus on Food Groups pages, other classes may be able to complete the pages on a single day. The notes will take 1-3 class periods to complete depending on the depth of information gathered by the students, amount of correction or clarification needed and method used (whole class, walk around, jigsaw) to complete the notes pages.
I used this assignment in a special education life skills class for grades 8-11, but it would also work well with younger students.
