Common Core Aligned! No Prep! Print and Teach!
This practice work focuses on determining the theme of a literary work.
Students are required to read the Grimm's fairy tale of "Sultan". Sultan is a faithful and loyal dog who faces possible death because he is too old and useless.
The story is short and the theme is straightforward.
I have provided annotation side bars for students to use to write down any questions or comments as they read.
After reading the story, students are asked to go back and highlight any text that seems to teach a lesson or demonstrate a universal truth about life.
Students are given questions to answer that lead them to think about the theme of the story and the text which supports that theme.
The last activity gives students a list of text excerpts. Students must choose the text that supports the given theme.
Finally, students use the text evidence in a graphic organizer to plan a summary of the story focused on theme.
I have provided a sample summary as a model for students.
I have also provided the same sample summary with transition words and phrases highlighted in a different color.
