I developed this visual reading tool, “Fold ‘n’ Flip: Decoding CVC Words,” for several of my students who were able to segment simple consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, but could not blend the sounds back into a word. Some students with special needs do not understand that the sounds they are saying represent a word or object. They also may have difficulty holding in memory the sequence of sounds they have just segmented. With this tool, students decode the written word and then check their accuracy by opening the flap to see a picture of the word. After guided practice, students can work independently with this tool.
In this product, words are organized according to the short vowel. There are:
5 pages and 25 words for short vowel a
3 pages and 15 words for short vowel e
4 pages and 20 words for short vowel i
4 pages and 20 words for short vowel o
4 pages and 20 words for short vowel u
The last section includes 4 pages. Each page includes a word for the 5 different short vowels.
You can present students with a whole page of word strips or cut out each word strip to present separately.
I hope you and your students “flip” over this product!
