Why just tell your students about "silent e" when they can discover this on their own? Try these "Short A" cards for free! If you like these, check out my "Fold-over Cards - Silent E" that include the vowels a-i-o-u.
These fold-over cards are great to introduce the concept of "silent e" to your students. You can use them in Word Work Centers or with partners/small groups. Simply print them two-sided, in color or black and white, cut them apart, and they are ready to use! When they are open, students read a CVC word with the short sound. Fold them over and the word becomes a CVCe word with the long vowel sound. Differentiate to student levels by using cards with pictures or without. After decoding the new words, students can use them in a sentence and share their sentences with their partners.
Students will make these words:
pan / pane
can / cane
man / mane
rat / rate
hat / hate
mat / mate
