Any word can be a sight word for an individual student. However, the definition of a sight word is a high frequency word or commonly used word that children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight so that they can automatically recognize the word in print without having to use any strategies to decode. Sight words account for a large percentage (up to 75%) of the words used in beginning
children's print materials. Although sight words are considered high frequency words, sight vocabulary is also very important. Sight vocabulary is often confused with sight words (high frequency or commonly used words). Sight vocabulary is defined as each individual's own bank of vocabulary words that the individual recognizes instantly without having to decode. This intervention can be used in reading, language arts, science, social studies, or any other subject that requires reading.
