PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This classic anti-war ballad addresses themes of nationalism, propaganda and the futility of war, with simple, powerful and poignant lyrics. It is a superb introduction to folk ballads as a multimodal literary form. It captures the tragedy of a country seeking to establish its national identity through a sacrificial myth born in its bloody participation in World War One.

The lyrics of Bogle's ballad are accompanied by eighteen questions of escalating levels of difficulty (comprehension - analysis/interpretation - critique), which teachers can use or modify as appropriate for their students.
