This unit includes 22 lessons spelled out from beginning to end focusing on the genres of folktales, fairy tales, and myths. The lessons focus on the Common Core standards from reading foundational skills, literature, language, and speaking and listening. It is written for an 8 week time frame. Each lesson will last around 45 minutes. I have budgeted three lessons per week, but could be spread out into five shorter lessons a week.
The folk tales are a mix between Native American and African folk tales. I have included fables to increase students’ abilities to determine the message of a story. The main focus areas for this section of the unit are summarizing and character traits and motivations.
The fairy tales focus on five Cinderella stories from around the world. I have also added two versions of The Three Little Pigs in order to practice skills. The skills focused on in this section are determining character traits and motivations, distinguishing a point of view, and comparing texts.
The myths are centered around a mix of dragon lore and Greek myths. Students will focus on character traits and motivations as well as comparing texts.
