Product Description
This novel (Follow My Leader by James Garfield) is unique as it represents a time period in 1950 and that will transport our students into a different era. They will learn slang words, read about a community of pick up baseball games, and nearby family support. The characters respect their elders and perform daily chores to help and grow in responsibility.
Bad things do happen to our protagonist and he must overcome and rise above the tragedy with courage, forgiveness and leadership. The author also suffers from blindness so the vantage point is relevant and offers insight to the world the protagonist faces. Many people from various walks of life enter his life and help. These roles show compassion, yet straightforward answers and help for one who helps himself.
A 97 page work book to help guide the students into this novel will help immerse them into a TIME TRAVEL Experience.
Students will be led into the 1950s with some research projects of topics that are introduced in the novel. From games, to trivia and even echolocation you tubes, the students will use technology to learn even more and immerse themselves into the story. Blind Man's Bluff and Sherlock Holmes style observation games are provided to help the students feel the experience along with Jimmy (main character). Braille flash cards will further enable the students to try their hand at learning this foreign language! They can pass secret notes and messages. A non-fiction reading passage is provided to offer more background on transportation of the time period. Opportunities are also offered to encourage the students to make a real world connection and find ways to volunteer and help others.
Your students can jump back in time to another period with youtube video links to the popular TV shows (Gunsmoke, and Leave it to Beaver), as well as the music of the year 1957 and Elvis.
Let's do MORE than just read a book, let us invite the students in to the world and time period. Swell...
Try this book for some unique classroom experiences. Something for all levels of students.
A TIC TAC TOE project will enable students to select three items that they would like to complete in order to showcase their expertise on this novel to your classroom. So much more personalized than a book report.
