A Fun Game to Teach Strategies for Following Directions & Get Your Kiddos Up and Moving
The Following Directions Game is a fun way to get your kiddos up and moving around while learning strategies for how to remember directions and follow them. This game was created originally to support my kiddos in a fun way to practice following directions. Then it became a requested game that we, at times, used during our Morning Meeting. It was evident that the class was beginning to figure out strategies to follow and focus on directions. Here’s is how we played this game:
I gave a direction and then the kiddos would volunteer to follow it. If they were incorrect another child was chosen to try it and so on...but I was just making the directions up as I went along and guess what? YEP...I would forget what I had asked them to do...YES...this did really happen.
So I decided to make up cards and keep them in a box or jar near my easel or in a place where they would be easily accessible to use in a pinch or for a sub. I actually stored them in a beach bucket and had it hanging from the side of my easel. So now I would pull a card from the bucket as the children sat in a circle or at their seats...your choice... I would sometimes choose the cards ahead of time depending on whether I wanted, 2,3 or 4 step directions and proceed by reading a card and then having children follow the , at times, silly direction on the card. IF they followed it the first time...BRAVO! Sometimes we added extra fun by dividing into 2 teams and the team received 5 point if they got it on the first try and the points descending one point each time it was not followed correctly. Sometimes we kept a running score. After each child follows the directions...have them share their thinking and how they remembered what to do so their thinking is visible to others and they can learn from each other.
